“A Little Presence in My Head”: Gendered Attitudes and Student Speech in Single-Sex and Coed Classrooms
Academic Talk by Christopher Parsons
Friday, October 2, 2015, 3pm-5pm
Angell Hall, Room 3222
Please join us as we workshop an academic talk with Christopher Parsons, a student in the Joint Program in English and Education. This talk pursues questions about the difference gender makes to high school students in academic settings. One student in the study describes gender as “a little presence in my head” as she works in a science lab. To examine that presence, we will look at classroom speech data from 6 classrooms (3 English, 3 science) in 3 schools (one coed, one all-female, one all-male) as well as interviews with students about the way gender performances affect (or don’t) their engagement with school.
The presentation will be, in many ways, a work-in-progress, so we will stop frequently in the hope of hearing feedback, reactions, ideas, and questions from those in attendance.

We will have snacks and beverages available. We hope to see you there!
